Medical Debt Burdens 20 Percent in U.S.

One-in-5 U.S. adults say they are burdened by medical debt and half of them are unable to pay the debt at all, federal health officials said.

Lead author Robin Cohen of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention'sNational Center for Health Statistics said health insurance -- public or private -- frequently determines whether families can pay for their medical expenses.

Illegal late fees/fraud by Aliso Viejo Community Association

I am writing to tell you about actions taken by the Aliso Viejo Community Association (AVCA) that I believe to be illegal. Each quarter, the community association sends an invoice to all homeowners in Aliso Viejo for community association dues. The community association funds community activities, gardening, etc. throughout Aliso Viejo. The payment due is approximately $40. Back in 2008, I owned a small condo in Aliso Viejo and was 30 days late in paying my quarterly dues. The amount past due was less than $40, but the AVCA informed me that I would be required to pay a late fee of $200.

Cancellation Penalty

Direct TV sent us a letter wanting to upgrade our equipment at "no cost to us." This upgrade took place Aug of 2011. We decided to cancel our services today (March 14 2012) and were told that when we upgraded the equipment, then a new contract was started. So if we want to cancel the services then it will cost us over $300. They said the sent the info in an email, but I never put my signature on an agreement that stated this. I did sign that I got the new equipment; that is all.
