Eloise - Antioch, CA - AT&T Trying to Get Remaining Balance on Old DirecTV Acct After Settled/Closed with Collections

Companies Involved:
AT&T (DirecTV)
Issue Area:
Billing Errors

These past few months, I have worked on cleaning up my credit report; made settlements with three collections agencies. About 45 days after I settled and paid off my balance with IC System (collections agency that handled my old DirecTV account), I found out that AT&T would not allow me to activate my security system service due to unpaid balance. As far as I'm aware off, all my accounts with AT&T are current. The customer service rep transferred me to another department who told me that I should pay the balance on the old DirecTV account that was in collections. I asked if they were notified by IC System that they made an agreement with me regarding the settlement amount. At first, two individuals I spoke to made it sound like they are not aware of the settlement or paid off/closed account in collections. Then I asked for a manager who then told me that I still owe $181, which was the difference of the original amount when it was referred to collections minus the settlement amount I paid (offered to me by the collections agency 75 days earlier). In the first place, I owed DirecTV for early termination that made them refer my account to collections. I believe that there are currently a few disputes and arbitration filed against DirecTV about the early termination issue. Since DirecTV was bought out by AT&T, is AT&T allowed to collect more from the customer after an old DirecTV account has been settled and closed with the collections agency? When I spoke to IC System (collections agency), cust. service agent C. Bower said that my account should have been considered settled and closed by DirecTV/AT&T as stated on the report that they sent to them shortly after I paid off my account.
