Samuel - Santa Monica, CA - USC + Aetna + Covered CA Health Insurance catch 22 for a recent law graduate

Companies Involved:
USC, Aetna, Covered California
Issue Area:
Heath Care

I recently graduated from USC. As such my student health coverage (through Aetna) lapsed on August 16th, 2015. I have secured health coverage that begins September 1, 2015 through my wife's employer. I currently attempting to make sure I am covered for the next two weeks. Covered California will not give me coverage because they will not start coverage mid-month unless I am a newborn. USC's Aetna plan offers only one option, which is to require me to pay for a three month extension on my coverage for an extremely high rate (something like $1000). Thus, USC (mostly), and Covered California have put me in the following predicament: I am unable to purchase coverage for the next two weeks unless I purchase an entire three month extension at a rate that massively exceeds anything I could get on the private market. To make matters worse there was absolutely zero outreach on USC's part during this entire process. Additionally, participation in the USC health plan was mandatory. As a side note, I just got my JD from USC and just took the bar. I would be more than willing to do some research on this. This feels massively unjust and I believe it likely effects a large number of graduate students.
