Cool Down the Hot Fuel Ripoff
Send a free fax to your U.S. Senator
When the temperature of gasoline rises above 60 degrees, gasoline expands but gasoline pumps don't account for the bigger volume. Consumers receive less energy from a gallon than they should. Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri has sponsored a law to require temperature-adjusted pumps, but the oil industry is working hard to prevent its passage.

The Problem with Hot Gas:In August 2006, FTCR called upon state and federal regulators to adopt new temperature-sensitive gasoline pump technology in response to an investigation by the Kansas City Star. Reporter Steve Everly found fuel pumps that do not adjust for temperature cost Californians at least 3 cents for every gallon in warmer weather, $500 million annually, and overcharge Americans more than $2.3 billion annually.
