Stop Insurance Companies from Spying On Your Car
California residents: Send this free message to the Insurance Commissioner
Twenty years ago, California voters decided that how far you drive has to be the second-most important part of auto insurance rates (driving safety record is the first). That rule was never fully enacted, until now.
The state Insurance Commissioner is writing regulations to implement what's become known as 'pay-as-you-drive' insurance. That should mean that people who drive less pay lower insurance premiums, as Prop 103 requires.
The insurance industry, however, would like to use this opportunity to put high-tech tracking devices in our cars. They'd use these devices to track mileage, but they also want to know things like when, where and how fast we're driving.
Insurance Commissioner Poizner has vowed: "It is vital that the privacy of drivers remains intact. I will not approve any auto insurance policy that aims to utilize GPS devices in order to obtain location data from consumers."
Send him the message above to make sure he sticks to that promise, and bans insurance companies from electronically tracking when, where or how we drive.
