I don’t often agree with Google, but today I must admit that the Internet giant said exactly the right thing and came out strongly in support of net neutrality.

Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic is treated equally on the Internet.  The Federal Communications Commission is in the process of considering rules that could allow Internet service providers to offer priority treatment to some data.

As Consumer Watchdog told the FCC, this would undermine the Internet and stifle innovation.  We think broadband access should be re-classified and regulated under Title II of the Communications Act and Internet service providers should considered common carriers.

Across the Internet today activists were making it clear the importance of net neutrality.  Google posted its own comments:

If Internet access providers can block some services and cut special deals that prioritize some companies’ content over others, that would threaten the innovation that makes the Internet awesome.We believe that consumers should continue to enjoy open on-ramps to the Internet. That means no Internet access provider should block or degrade Internet traffic, nor should they sell ‘fast lanes’ that prioritize particular Internet services over others. These rules should apply regardless of whether you’re accessing the Internet using a cable connection, a wireless service, or any other technology.

Again, I don’t often agree with Google, but they got it exactly right this time.
