Keeping Politicians Honest
Crack Down on Political Junkets
Send this free fax to California's Political Ethics Board
California's political ethics board (the FPPC) just issued new rules that force politicians to explain the reasons behind their spending sprees and overseas junkets, and disclose the recipients of expensive gifts from their campaign accounts, like $2700 belt buckles and Louis Vuitton luxuries.
But there's one big loophole. Lawmakers will have to explain why they're going on a ten-day jaunt to Japan or Hawaii, but not to Napa or Palm Springs. Even though California legislators spent $395,000 since 2005 on things like golf, wine, and fine dining in California, the regulations don't yet require disclosure for in-state travel.
So fax a letter to the FPPC today, thanking them for their quick action to rein in out-of-control spending, and asking them to extend the same rules to travel within California.
