Two Not-For-Profit Health Insurers Spending Big Bucks At Levi's Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers' financial health is being aided by two not-for-profit health insurers.

Blue Shield of California and Dignity Health each own luxury suites at Levi's Stadium that go for at least $2.5 million apiece, according to a story in the Matier & Ross column in the San Francisco Chronicle.

In addition, Dignity Health, formerly known as Catholic Healthcare West, is also the 49ers' exclusive health industry sponsor. The organization is spending money on advertisements at the $1.2 billion stadium, even sponsoring a Dignity Health Plaza.

The expenditures have brought criticism from some consumer advocates.

"It's scandalous that two not-for-profit health care companies that are exempt from state taxes waste millions of dollars on luxury sky boxes rather than putting those charitable dollars toward patient care or lower premiums," Jamie Court of Consumer Watchdog told the Chronicle.

In a statement, Dignity Health officials said they were "proud to be the official health care partner of the San Francisco 49ers." They noted the company "is sponsoring the first-aid clinics located throughout the facility and will be hosting several special health and wellness events throughout the season."

The statement added that "in today's highly competitive health care market, the sponsorships also provide positive visibility and recognition for the Dignity Health brand and the services we provide."
