DISCOUNTED COMMISSIONS

Be advised: Some brokers will insist they cannot legally cut their commissions. Others (especially auto insurance agents, who make limited commissions) don’t like to. Shop around for those that will — or, if you like, select an insurer that doesn’t use agents. Their rates can be cheaper (but you won’t get the personal service agents provide).

Text of Proposition 103:

103 repealed sections of the Insurance Code which barred competition among brokers.

Status of Provision:

Many insurers have refused to permit their insurance agents and brokers to negotiate such discounts.

Harvey Rosenfield

As Consumer Watchdog's founder, Harvey Rosenfield is one of the nation's foremost consumer advocates. Trained as a public interest lawyer, Rosenfield authored Proposition 103 and organized the campaign that led to its passage by California voters in 1988 despite over $80 million spent in opposition (still a record).
